Emmanuel Church was founded in 1974. From the outset the doctrines of grace were preached in the Church together with a strong emphasis on missions. By late 1974 international students from the Auckland University and Technical Institute began attending. These friends were mainly from Singapore and Malaysia. Hundreds of such students passed through the church from 1974 to 1979 and from this momentum a Reformed Baptist Church (Shalom Church) was established in Singapore in 1979.
In 1984 Emmanuel Church set apart Stephen Turner and David Sterne to establish a new work on the North Shore of Auckland: Shore Baptist Church. From the student nature of the church in the 1970s and 1980s, the church has developed into a family church. Around 100+ gather each Sunday morning. David Yan is the pastor with support from a faithful diaconate, some of the deacons having served in Emmanuel Church for many years. In 1999 the church purchased its own building, having previously met in rented halls each Sunday morning, and in 2012 they opened a new extension to their existing facilities which were also extensively renovated.
Over the years Emmanuel Church has co-operated with other churches in the hosting of camps and conferences. From its beginning the church has stood for and proclaimed the Doctrines of Grace. It uses the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith as a foundational statement of faith. Emmanuel Church believes in global missions and is involved in such, particularly in Asia.
